Easy side pockets with the freebie

I haven't always been the type of person who needed pockets in every piece of clothing, as I have enough bags to carry around and really appreciate them as an addition to my outfits. BUT - somehow they are just great when you don't know where to put your hands. Or your mobile phone. Or whatever.

To make sure that you can sew a nice roomy side pocket into every side seam, here's a small but nice FREEBIE with instructions. The finish is true to craftmenship with a French seam and creates a beuaituful inside - we love that, too . Download, print and off you go.

How feels French seams are not their thing today:

On my Instagram there is a totally ingenious and quick way to get the pocket sewn in without much fuss. Just look out for the ‘easy side pockets’ reel and don't forget to save it.

For all those who would like to have it in written form and a little slower, just read on.

So here's how it works:

  1. Finish the side edges and the entire edges of the pocket pieces.

  2. Transfer the markings for the opening and sew the sides of your garment together, right sides facing. Press the seam allowance open on the inside and make sure that the seam allowance is the same width at the opening!

  3. Press the seam allowance at the straight edge of all pocket pieces onto the wrong side of the fabric.

  4. Take two mirrored pocket pieces and place them on the garments seam allowance at the pocket opening from the inside with the right side of the pocket facing up. Topstitch them close to the edge, using the pressed edge of the seam allowance of the garment as a guide.

  5. Place the pocket pieces on top of each other, right sides facing and sew them together along the edges, including the garments seam allowance. Start and end at the side seam of the garment.

  6. Press the pocket to the front and, if necessary, topstitch at the two ends of the pocket opening to prevent tearing and to keep the pocket permanently at the front.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy, right? The future is nice because: It has pockets! Enjoy.

xx
